Our Vicino Lontano Sangiovese is a gorgeous example of a classic Italian wine style that honors centuries of tradition. From the soils of southwestern Sicily, this light and friendly wine is impeccably balanced with modest red fruit flavors, a hint of sweetness, and subtle spice. A relatively dry Mediterranean climate allows our Italian winemaking partners to take great care in selecting the perfect time for harvest. Italy's Terre Siciliane covers wines made across the island of Sicily—including its satellite islands of Salina, Pantelleria and Stromboli. The wines can be still or sparkling, red, white or rosé, dry or sweet, and made from such grape varieties as Sangiovese, Catarratto and Vermentino. Whatever the style, Terre Siciliane wines benefit from the natural features of this southern Italian region. Sicily's abundant sunshine, mineral-rich soils, coastal breezes and drying African winds help it produce exceptional grapes that transfer into wines of character and expression. The IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) classification system was created to provide more freedom and ease for winemaking within Italy. Wines under the IGT classification are regulated on the region of origin—where within the country grapes are grown—instead of varietals or wine styles as DOC and DOCG laws focus on.
