Ribera del Duero
Spain's Ribera del Duero region is revered among fine wine lovers for its rich, deeply flavored, and long-aging red wines. Lying along the upper valley of the Duero River (which becomes the Duoro as it flows in Portugal), Ribera del Duero's wines are known for their lush black cherry, blackberry and fig notes. As in Rioja, Tempranillo is the principal variety, produced in the area's extreme climate and dry, sandy-clay soils. At around 2,500 feet, night-time temperatures plummet here, while the days can be fiercely hot in the summer months. It is these extreme conditions that help create such extraordinary wines. Some producers add Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec to their Tempranillo. The DO (Denominación de Origen) category within Spain’s wine classifications is the largest portion within the country’s pyramid of quality. Wines are approved to be at DO status when they meet a handful of standards related to authorized varietals, production size, methods within winemaking and aging restrictions. Additionally, appellations must have been recognized for a minimum of five years in order to be considered to be a DO.

Smoke
Spices
Blackcurrant
Powerful with well-rounded tannins to create a velvety, clean wine with fresh varietal notes that reappear under the tongue after the first few seconds in the glass. Notes intermingle with the smoky aromas of impeccable wood. Very pleasant on the palate with a fruity aftertaste, predominantly blackcurrants, and licorice, which give way to a spicy finish.

ABOUT THE BRAND:
Tinto Pesquera
In 1972, Alejandro Fernández and his wife, Esperanza, licensed their bodega in Pesquera. This was well before Ribera del Duero was a well-known region for quality wines. The 16th-century lagar and press house serving as grape receiving and processing through the 1982 harvest. His machine shop, which ceased business in 1985, still serves as the source for stainless tanks and countless other items for the vineyard and bodega. The barrels are a mix of American, Spanish, and French oak, custom-cured and made by Spain’s finest coopers.
