This noble grape variety is planted throughout the world but thrives atop the mountains of Mendoza. Vineyards here reach some of the highest elevations worldwide, often grown at 2,600 to 4,000 feet above sea level. The dry, scorching days are significantly impacted by the altitude. Afternoon winds from the western side of the nearby Andes Mountains alleviate the high daytime temperatures across the plateau. Here the soils are low in fertility and quick-draining, which creates an ideal environment for wine growing. With its extreme altitudes and Andean climate, Mendoza nurtures its vineyards in dramatic sun-drenched plateaus set against snow-capped peaks. At these elevations, the intense UV light ripens grapes in a unique way, working with the cold mountain air to create gloriously supple and expressive wines with bold yet brightly aromatic fruit.
