ABOUT THIS WINE:
Izak's 177
Grenache
Izak’s 177 continues to offer quintessential expressions of South African wine. Our Grenache is upbeat and fruit forward with soft textures and a delightful hint of spice. It is uncertain how Grenache made its way to South African soils, but the most common theory credits James Busby — “the father of Australian wine” — for leaving cuttings in the Western Cape on his way to Australia. However it arrived, Grenache’s story in South African soils is one of success. This native European variety thrives in the dry conditions and warm climate of Swartland. Vineyards here can be found along the mountains and hillsides that make up this region’s diverse topography. Our local winemaking partners stay true to what this brand represents by showing a steadfast commitment to developing this region’s vast potential. Our Grenache is light and bright, well suited to grilled white meats or roasted vege ...

WINE REGION:
Swartland
Swartland is one of South Africa's largest wine regions, famed for its mouthwatering Chenin Blancs, fragrant Syrahs and punchy Pinotage. Forty miles north of Cape Town, Swartland covers a large area from the Atlantic Ocean to the sun-kissed plains of Piketberg. The region has a hot, dry climate away from the cooling ocean, with ancient shale and granite-based soils. This forces the vines to work hard, producing small but concentrated grapes.

ABOUT THE BRAND:
Izak's 177
Cape Town native Abraham Izak Perold played a significant role in his country’s rich wine history. After graduating from Victoria College in Stellenbosch, he traveled to Germany to obtain his Ph.D. in Chemistry. Upon graduating, Perold toured Europe, where he became fluent in many languages and familiarized himself with the historic wines of various Old World regions. Not long after his return to Cape Town in 1906, Perold was approached by the South African government; they requested he return to Europe, this time with the task of seeking out new grape varieties that could potentially thrive in South African soils. Perold returned to his home country with 177 varieties. Each of our Izak’s 177 wines is an exquisite local expression of its varietal. Our collection offers a glimpse into the history of South African wine and the boundless potential of Old World grape varieties in this New World wine region.
