The stunning Monterey County wine region in Northern California is home to some of the most prestigious wineries in the state. Visitors are greeted with a rugged coastline, towering eucalyptus trees, and some of California's most dynamic vineyards. Boasting one of the longest growing seasons in the world, the area experiences a typically dry and warm climate, but the unique environmental factor is the fog and wind from the Monterey Bay. These coastal influences settle in the valleys within the region, which lie between the Santa Lucia and Gabilan Mountain Ranges, and create a layer of protection against the bright afternoon California sun. Not to be confused with Monterey AVA, Monterey County is a larger designation that also includes the Carmel and San Antonio valleys, among others. Encompassing three distinct zones at the northern end of the Central Coast, Monterey County produces vast amounts of high-quality Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Gris. For reds, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon have often been replaced by Pinot Noir, Syrah and Grenache in recent years. These cooler-climate grapes achieve greatness through the influence of Monterey Bay, which pushes cold fogs and chilly afternoon winds down the Salinas Valley, tempering the sun's heat and allowing a long, moderate ripening season.
